The venue was Glasgow's finest Carling Academy, the support act were recent icscotland interviewees Client; who were kind enough to get me on the guest list for the gig last night (March 1st).
Client girls Sarah and Kate kicked off an evening of electro-fuelled pop with their infectious beats and raunchy lyrics:
'Make me trouble, make me want you. You're so filthy, aren't you, baby?'
The girls believe that image is an important part of their music and judging by the looks on the guys faces I'd say the sexy, tight airhostess outfits got a firm thumbs up!
With their second album City released at the end of last year and new single Pornography peaking at number twenty two in the charts it seems that word is spreading about this talented pop duo. Their tour with Erasure continues on Thursday March 3rd with a show in Newcastle's City Hall.
After the Client electro buzz had died down and the roadies finished dismantling their gear, the lights were dropped and the crowd's excitement doubled. An arcane synth rendition of Three Blind Mice poured out from behind the curtains before they were promptly lifted and the stage lights raised to reveal singer Andy Bell sporting fluffy angel wings, two gorgeous tall backing singers in fluffy pink skirts and tight basques and multi-instrumentalist Vince Clarke wearing a brown suit complete with World War two style leather pilot hat; crowd goes berserk and the music begins!
The stage backdrop looked fantastic with massive leafless life-size trees stretching to the Academy stage ceiling, in keeping with the band's artwork for their new album Nightbird.
Former Depeche Mode band member Vince Clarke, who formed the band with singer Andy Bell in 1985, remained fairly deadpan and sedate throughout the show while show-stealer Andy had the crowd eating out of his hand. I lost count of the number of wolf whistles he got as he showed off his flamboyant dance moves in between vocal lines.
The dedicated crowd knew every song off by heart, recognising almost every one with an affirming cheer after the second note.
The band have had an impressive five UK number one albums and seventeen top ten singles in a career spanning almost twenty years. The most recent single was number four hit Breathe from the new album Nightbird.
Of course the night would not be complete without one or two costume changes! The first saw Andy Bell don a blue sparkly jump suit, followed by a strip down to a slightly more revealing pair of silver hot pants. The crowd lapped up every move of his body. At one point I swear I even saw a pair of knickers being thrown on stage!
