Super Furry Animals rock the capital

By Fraser Lenson-Wade

Super Furry Animals
Corn Exchange, Edinburgh
4 out of 5

Gruff from the Super Furry Animal As I made my way to the front at the crowded Corn Exchange, the stage emerged on top of which was large Phantom Power wooden cut outs and a massive screen behind them that would later show excerpts of art work and DVD offerings from the band I'm here to see, the Super Furry Animals.

With the departure of the support act the focus was now solely on the Welsh rockers. The large screen began the interaction with the crowd through a camera on the DJ backstage who was presenting messages such as, "let SFA Friday your Tuesday" - and that's exactly what they proceeded to do.

First out of the bag was Slow Life from the band's most recent album, which provided an indication that the emphasis with this band is as much to do with their visual appeal as it is with sound. This was also evident through lead singer Gruff who adorned his head with an oversized Power Rangers helmet whilst inserting a mic through the side to create a surreal opening.

With the band evidently getting into the swing of things, old classics such as God! Show me magic, Bad Behaviour and Herman Loves Pauline were unleashed and easily mixed into newer songs such as Rings around the World, Juxtapozed With U and Run! Christian, Run! with footage from their fifth studio album/DVD running in the background.

Later the band performed just about every main track from their six albums, including a few from the Welsh offering Mwng. More recent material was also aired including tracks such as Liberty Bell, Golden Retriever and the thumping Out of Control which made the audience wild with frenzied excitement before leading the show to a climax with The man don't give a f***.

With the audience in raptures all but one member of the five-strong band left the stage as he then led the crowd into a full-on 15 minute rave full of techno and acid house beats.

Then, to everyone's amazement, the rest returned dressed as monstorous Yetti's to finish off the song that we'd forgotten was still being playedÂ…The man don't give a f***!

And as the band departed for the final time a message on the giant screen informed the audience that 'SFA loves youÂ…xxx.'

For a two-hour performance, the band were solid through album-perfect lyrics, percussion and harmonies as well as a great stage set up. But it would have been nice for a few more of their classic tracks to be heard - namely Demons, Something for the weekend and If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You.
