I can't wait to fly solo on tour

It seems unbelievable that it's been less than two years since Gareth's debut single, Unchained Melody, went to number one making 17-year-old Gareth the youngest male solo artist ever to hit the top spot.

And it's great to be talking with Gareth, well known for his stammer. Usually interviews have been conducted by email or not at all.

Go Your Own Way was split into two CDs, Night and Day. On Night Gareth co-wrote seven of the tracks Groove With me, All Cried Out, Enough Of Me, Go Your Own Way, Just Say Yes, Freak My Baby and Club Hoppin'.

Gareth enjoys song-writing. He said: 'I love writing. I've written from my early years when I found my speech hard. That's the one thing I was able to do to release what was inside me. Iwould write little songs and sing them as opposed to speak them.'

Gareth Gates denies his 15 minutes are over as he embarks on his first solo tour

From there he learnt the piano, guitar and drums. And with four number one singles behind him Gareth is ready to offer his own tunes.

He admitted: 'I've never thrown anything away. I've still got my first songs that I wrote.

'I want to take my writing seriously. I'm going to do much more writing on the next album.

'I'm very proud of Go Your Own Way. It showed a new side of me.'

Gareth has found success. His seven singles have all been top fives. As well as the number ones, What My Heart Wants To Say went to number five in December 2002, Sunshine went to number three in September last year and Say It Isn't So went to number four in December.

Gareth's comeback is likely to begin at the Brit Awards. Spirit In The Sky is a contender to win best British single against Dido's White Flag, Jamelia's Superstar, Mis-Teeq's Scandalous and Rachel Stevens' Sweet Dreams My LA Ex.

If it hadn't been for the surprise success of Black Eyed Peas' Where Is The Love, Spirit In The Sky would have been 2003's biggest selling single.

At last year's Brit Awards Gareth was nominated for best pop act and had two of his singles, Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake) and Unchained Melody in the British single category although he lost out to Liberty X's Just A Little.

Gareth is especially proud of being nominated again this year.

He said: 'To be nominated for a Brit is any popstar's dream and to be doing it for Spirit In The Sky which helped so many people as it was a charity record is even better.

'I'm pleased it's been nominated asit shows it's a good song and not just another charity record.

'It's also great for Comic Relief as it's more publicity and hopefully more people will get on board and help.'

After the Brit Awards he'll be rehearsing for his debut tour which starts in Glasgow on February 28.

He's been here before on the Pop Idol tour and the Will, Gareth & Zoe tour. This is his first on his own.

He said: 'It's great I'm finally going on tour. I'm really excited.
