T in the Park 2006 diary day two

By Stephen McKenna

A night in my own bed and a shower in the morning brought me back to T fresh faced and keen to experience more rock 'n' roll festival fun!

We got through the gates just as The Proclaimers were singing 500 Miles on the Main Stage. I can't think of a more perfect start to the final day!

After a quick food stop, we headed over to the Main Stage to see The Magic Numbers.

This London four-piece are the perfect sunshine band for a festival. Their lush harmonies and catchy melodies proved to be a huge hit with the thousands of fans crammed in at the main stage.

I love how the brother and sister duos of Romeo (guitar/vocals) and Michelle (bass) and Sean (drums) and Angela (percussion and melodica) do not fit the beautifully pretty and slim ideal of the notoriously fickle music industry - but the crowd don't care about that when they belt out such modern day classics as Forever Lost, Love Me Like You, Love's a Game and Mornings Eleven from their 2005 debut self titled album.

The radio is a wonderful invention. It introduces you to so many great new bands and artists and it is the main reason why fields of festival fans can sing along to brand new songs by the Kooks, The Zutons and Franz Ferdinand. One of the most recent songs to fill our ears on the radio has been the new song Smile by Lily Allen (comedian Keith Allen's daughter).

No prizes for guessing where we headed off to next then? Yes the lure of Lily proved too much so off we went to The Futures Stage and caught half of her set.

Dressed in a white ball gown, the latest rising star that made her name on MySpace.com was strutting around stage with a pint in one hand and a cigarette in the other. The tent was jam packed with fans eager to hear the song that they had been listening to on the radio for the past couple of weeks. Just before Lily played Smile however, her manager came to the side of the stage with a bottle of champagne in his hand. An excited Lily then announced that her single had just gone to number one and the crowd replied with deafening cheers and applause!

Back outside in the Sunday sunshine we discussed where best to go next. I was due to interview Zero 7 today but I got a call at 10am telling me that the band were stranded in Ireland after their tour bus broke down returning from T in the Park's sister festival Oxygen. With that in mind, we dropped in to the Pet Sounds Arena to catch a set by Zero 7 collaborator Jose Gonzalez.

Jose has come a long way since the first time I saw him in Glasgow's intimate Nice n Sleazys venue last year. After his cover of The Knife's Heartbeats appeared in that Sony Bravia advert, tickets for his live shows have become highly sought-after!

Appearing about thirty minutes late on the Pet Sounds Stage, Jose was greeted with warm cheers and treated the fans to stirring renditions of album tracks Remain, Crosses, Hints and Deadweight on Velveteen.

Jose cunningly avoided playing Heartbeats, but played note perfect renditions of latest single and Kylie Minogue cover Hand on Your Heart and Massive Attack masterpiece Teardrop.

Suitably chilled after the set by Mr Gonzalez, we decided to check out something to get the pulse racing a bit faster so where better than Optimo at the Slam Tent? Strobe lights, light sticks and thumping bass were the order of the day at Slam as Optimo DJs Twitch and Wilkes took to the decks around 6pm. The darkened surroundings were a hive of activity with dancers and people sprawled out enjoying the unique Slam Tent atmosphere. Big screens behind the DJs had some really cool visuals which changed between a mirrored shot of the DJ and a light show. In the hour that we were there, the set peaked with a mix of The Undertones Teenage Kicks, which had everyone singing and dancing along.
