After the instrumental intro of Jammin', Damian Marley was introduced to the crowd and there was a collective sigh; ahh so that's what he looks like. He is the spitting image of his dad!
For the best part of an hour, Junior Gong entertained the crowded tent with a collection of laid back reggae grooves and one or two Bob Marley covers. The highlights of the set were Exodus and Welcome to Jamrock. For the whole set, Damian was joined on stage by an energetic flag flyer who danced around waving a huge red, yellow and green Rasta flag!
The day did get off to a shaky start but the highly impressive Damian Marley set the benchmark for everyone else to aspire to.
Leaving the King Tuts Tent, we made our way to the Main Stage and caught the last few songs of Franz Ferdinand's set.
Once Franz Ferdinand left, there was the end of night choice of which one of the headliners to watch! The choice being The Cinematics (T Break stage), Cosmic Rough Riders (Futures Stage), Jeff Mills (SLAM Tent), Sigur Ros (Pet Sounds Arena), The Charlatans (King Tuts Tent), Paul Weller (Radio 1 / NME Stage) or the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The only real choice for us was between Sigur Ros and Red Hot Chili Peppers but as I have seen Sigur Ros a few times before, I decided to go see The Chilis!
The legendary funk rock pioneers proved to be a great end to the Saturday night. The crowd were singing along to hits like Californication, Scar Tissue and Around the World. After an hour or so of classics sandwiched between new material from their new Stadium Arcadium album, they went off for five minutes and sent the crowd into fits of cheering for more. We weren't disappointed though when they returned to play Under the Bridge and Give It Away.
The Chili Peppers may have been around for over twenty years but they proved on Saturday night that they can still put on a great show!
