MOVIE REVIEW: Walk Hard, The Dewey Cox Story (15)

By Richard Mooney

Walk Hard

This comedy is LAUGH-OUT-LOUD funny and definitely not to be taken seriously.

If you take it seriously I guarantee that you will not enjoy it. First off Dewey Cox isn’t real and this is a spoof mockumentary of a fictional rock star’s life.

Dewey Cox, played by John C. Reilly, comes from the small town of Springberry, Alabama. At the age of 8, an event occurred that would change his life forever. He chopped his brother in half with a machete. Disowned by his father and married at the age of 14, Cox sets out on a journey that will shape the world of music forever.

The whole plot is ingenious, yet unbelievably stupid. From the moment he has a confrontation with Elvis until the he meets the Beatles in India, it is both smart and brainlessly funny.

The scene with the Beatles is side-splitting. Jack Black is Paul McCartney, Paul Rudd is John Lennon, Justin Long is George Harrison and Jason Schwartzman is Ringo Starr.

Other notable cameos include the Temptations, Gerry Bednob as the Maharishi, Jack White as Elvis and Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly

Reilly is hilarious as the no brainer rock star. He is convincing, yet somehow twisted in his performance. Imagine an amalgamation of Joaquin Phoenix in the Walk the Line and Charlie Sheen in Hot Shots.

Jenna Fischer is also great as Darlene Madison. The chemistry between her and Reilly is awkward and funny, their kissing scenes in particular are very memorable.

Young director Jake Kasdan has come up trumps with Walk Hard. It is, by far, one of the funniest movies of 2008 so far.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is out now in cinemas nationwide.
