MOVIE PREVIEW: John Rambo

By Richard Mooney

He’s as old as your Grandad, he’s got more muscle than Vin Diesel and he’s as hard as Chuck Norris. Who is he?

Stallone as John Rambo

Sylvester Stallone returns as everybody’s favourite ‘Nam veteran in John Rambo, hitting theatres in January 2008.

This time around we see Rambo living the simple, secluded life as a scrap metal salvager in rural Thailand. That is until a group of Christian missionaries wishing to travel to Burma approach Rambo asking him to guide them over the Thai-Burmese border.

Reluctant at first, he agrees to take them half way. Not long after arriving in Burma, the missionaries encounter the Burmese army where most of them are captured and killed. Upon hearing this, Rambo enlists the aid of mercenaries to help rescue them.

So what can we expect? Well judging from the trailer it seems to be a lot similar to Rambo II, with all the tricks and traps of First Blood. So the body count is going to be high and the action is going to be old fashioned, bone crunching, in-your-face, grotesque.

Stallone is the writer, director and producer of the film.  The cast includes Julie Benz (Angel), Matthew Marsden (Resident Evil: Extinction), Jake La Botz (One Night with You) and Graham McTavish (Pandemic, Rome).

Due to the recent Burmese protests, Stallone has suggested in the news that his movie maybe becoming more of a documentary of the Burmese army, rather than an actual Rambo Movie.

Either way, we’re getting another 80’s icon coming back to the silver screen and hopefully it’ll be as good, if not, better than the original trilogy.

John Rambo is scheduled for a January 2008 release.
