The Simpsons Movie

By Richard Mooney

Its taken them 20 years to do it, but they finally done it. The Simpsons Movie is here and Homer's on the silver screen.

The Simpsons Movie

The Simpsons Movie will have you laughing out loud. It is by far the funniest movie of the summer and has Homer in some of his greatest situations yet.

Right at the start of the movie he's complaining about how he's had to pay for an Itchy and Scratchy movie, when he could be at home watching the episodes for free. The writers are obviously playing with the audience here but this is just one of a plethora of funny moments from the movie.

I'm going to defer from talking about the details of the plot to avoid spoiling it. It is simple and it could have been done as a three part episode. Infact that's what the whole Simpsons Movie experience is like: watching an 86 minute episode of the television show.

That's not a necessarily a bad thing for casual moviegoers and armchair fans of the Simpsons, but hardcore fans maybe left feeling a little underwhelmed by the story. The Simpsons have been around for 20 years and have already done a lot of possible movie material during that time. So for Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons) to come up with a script that is both decent and absolutely hilarious, is quite an achievement.

This movie is exactly what it says on the tin. It is The Simpsons Movie and that's basically what you get from it. From Nelson's infamous 'Haha!', to Abu's 'Thank you come again', it's all there. Every character you could want and Moe, excuse the pun.

While the movie isn't exactly what some might expect The Simpsons Movie to be, it is still the funniest film of the year so far and surpasses all comedies currently on offer.

You will find it hard to remember a time when an episode of The Simpsons wasn't on a television channel in the last 20 years. It is one of the foundations of 21st century popular culture and will remain so for a very long time.

The Simpsons Movie is out in cinemas nationwide.
