ST MIRREN boss Gus MacPherson last night branded the SPL's Under-21 rule as ridiculous. Those in charge of Scotland's topflight still insist clubs name three youngsters in their 18-man squads on match days. But MacPherson is the latest boss to speak out against the rule after similar outbursts from Walter Smith and Gordon Strachan. But the Love Street manager thinks he is wasting his time because his opinions are ignored. He said: "It's a ridiculous rule but it's only when people like Gordon Strachan and Walter Smith say anything that people listen. "When people like Gus MacPherson mention it, nobody listens to it." The Buddies boss is also miffed that the SPL rule doesn't take into account keepers - which means he has to name four Under-21s in his squad because Chris Smith doesn't count. MacPherson said: "It is a ridiculous rule that your keeper doesn't even count as Under-21. We have made a mockery of things because we still have to put three Under-21 outfield players on the bench." MacPherson reckons the system robs experienced players of a game - and more importantly sees kids thinking they have made it. He said: "It can affect young players. I haven't noticed it here but you are forced to put people on the bench who haven't earned the right. "Senior players are working hard and can't be involved so that is not right." MacPherson has signed veteran keeper Paul Mathers while Franco Miranda is set to make his debut. |
