Gus: We Must Be Brave To Foil Celts

Dec 7 2007

By Alan Marshall, Daily Record

GUS MacPHERSON has called on his St Mirren side to show courage when they face SPL leaders Celtic at Parkhead tomorrow.

Saints lost 5-1 at home to fellow strugglers Falkirk last week but he doesn't want to see players feeling sorry for themselves.

MacPherson is looking for a positive reaction from his men after an in-house post-mortem.

He said: "We had a chat with the players on Monday and it was a pretty open meeting.

"There was no animosity and it wasn't aggressive in any way.

"We showed them things on video from the Falkirk game - and not just the goals we lost - and got some constructive answers back.

"Players can give explanations or they can give excuses and we felt they gave us explanations.

"Now they must be positive and have belief against Celtic.

"They've got to be brave. They have to show a lot of courage to get on the ball and to pass it when they have possession.

"At Ibrox and Parkhead you have to work extremely hard as a group - the front two, the midfield four and the back four - and your keeper must have a good day too.

"None of the players can afford to switch off. They all have to make sure they are focused on getting a good result.

"There is no pressure on us. I know a lot of managers say that before trips to Ibrox or Parkhead but it's true.

"I just want to see a reaction after such a disappointing result against Falkirk.

"At clubs like St Mirren there are more disappointments than there are highs.

"When the highs come along you enjoy them. But you can't get too carried away because you've got to get back to reality and back to working as hard as you can. Our work ethic is our strongest point.

"Maybe last week's defeat was the timely reminder we needed."
