What The Hell Is Going On At Lyon? Says Lyon Star Sydney Govou Says His Boss Alain Perrin

Champions League Crunch Rangers V Lyon Pressure's All On Gers Pressure's All On Lyon 1 Point From The Promised Land

THE champions of France have a problem going into tonight's clash with Rangers - they don't know their derriere from their elbow.

Last night Lyon striker Sydney Govou insisted the pressure was on Walter Smith's side but manager Alain Perrin swore it was on his own team.

Rangers only need a point from tonight's Ibrox crunch to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League but anything less than a win will force Lyon to settle for the consolation of a UEFA Cup place.

Despite that Govou said: "They are under more pressure than us.

"We are playing away from home so they are under even more pressure. We don't have anything to lose.

"The fact they only need a draw doesn't mean anything because a 0-0 scoreline is not easy to get.

"We can qualify for the next stage with a victory. There is pressure but it is very exciting and different from the games we have played before."

But Perrin admits he would rather be in the position of rival boss Smith as they aim to finish Group E second to Barcelona.

The manager said: "The pressure is on us because we need to have real drive going into the game.

"Normally we qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League but this time Rangers are the favourites.

"They only need a draw and they have their supporters behind them."

But Perrin doesn't expect Rangers to defend in a bid to draw. He said: "They have the advantage but they have to attack us and we must be careful."

The stakes are high for both teams and that is why the former Portsmouth coach had no hesitation in labelling the game the biggest so far of his career in management .

Perrin said: "I have been involved in some big matches with other clubs but this is the biggest since Ibecame a manager."

The Lyon coach insists Rangers were done a massive favour when Sunday's SPL game away to Gretna was called off.

While the Ibrox side rested, Lyon endured the gruelling trip to Normandy where they lost to Caen.

Perr in said: "Rangers are coming into the match in better condition. They are in better shape than us but we didn't suffer injuries.

"This has caused a lot of debate in Scotland but it shows you have a big desire to protect your clubs and national team."

But Govou insists confidence in the dressing room was not damaged by the shock 1-0 defeat at Caen.

He said: "We would to have preferred have won but this is a totally different game and atmosphere and we know what we have to do.

"The staff and the coaches have told us that we have to win and that is our motivation. We will be trying to make it different this time."

The fact Rangers turned them over at home in October will also fire Lyon going into the game.

Govou said: "We made a lot of mistakes in the first game but we can take a lot from that. We know we will play better this time."

Rangers wobbled when they lost to Barcelona and Stuttgart but boss Perrin said: "Those games were away and they are at Ibrox this time.

"They play to win and we play good football but we will have to be mentally and physically strong."

Perrin is also expecting a tasty battle tonight but he warned Rangers Lyon will stand up to anything they throw at them.

He said: "It is important to be strong because the game will be physical and we are prepared for that.

Perrin also knows about Rangers midfielder Brahim Hemdani from their time together at Marseille - and he knows he is a tough nut to crack.

The French-Algerian has been a key component in Smith's side in Europe this season and will again be asked to protect his back four.

Perrin said: "He is a very important player for Rangers and he will be again when they face us.

"He shows great quality every time he plays. He can play in midfield or as a sweeper but he is very good technically and very strong."

Rangers will have to be on their guard to blunt the joint the threat of Juninho and Govou.

And Govou revealed he was a target for former Rangers manager Paul Le Guen before the Frenchman was sacked.

He said: "They made contact with me but it just stopped there."
