Points More Important Than Flair As Gers Bid To Stay Ahead Of The Rest Lee Will Grind Out Results To Stay Top

IT'S more than a decade since the Rangers nine-in-a-row side strutted their stuff.

Andy Goram, Richard Gough and John Brown were the rocks at the back and the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Brian Laudrup, Stuart McCall and Jorg Albertz provided the flair and orchestrated the midfield while Ally McCoist, Mark Hateley and Mo Johnston, among others, supplied the finish.

Under Walter Smith that great Rangers side racked up title after title in the trophy-laden days of the 1990s.

Fast forward a decade and the current Rangers crop under Smith desperately want to win a championship.

And while attacking midfielder Lee McCulloch recognises this Ibrox teammay lack the craft, guile and quality of Smith's nine-in-a-row heroes, he believes they have one thing in common with Gazza, Gough, Laudrup and Co - they know how to win.

Rangers chalked up their seventh consecutive SPL victory by beating Falkirk 2-0 on Saturday and hold a four-point lead over Celtic.

And while the Ibrox faithful may not consider the current football on offer pretty to watch, McCulloch knows his side are effective.

He said: "We're getting to the stage of the season where it is all about results.

"We know we're not playing free-flowing football but the club does not have the likes of Gascoigne and Laudrup any more.

"We've won seven games in a row and are wearing teams down and grinding out results.

"There's always pressure at a club like Rangers, even at the start of the season we had to win. It was the same in the middle and now at the end of the season we have to keep winning if we want to take the title.

"Supporters want to win and win with style but sometimes that's not possible. You just have to win if you want to remain at the top of the league.

"Rangers are a solid outfit now.

We've won seven in a row and are at the top of the league, in the League Cup Final and last 32 of the UEFA Cup. It's a dramatic turnaround from 12 months ago."

One of the great conundrums for Rangers this season has been Kris Boyd.

The great debate rages on as to whether the Scotland hitman should get a regular start for his club.

Against Falkirk, Boyd bagged the opening goal from a free-kick to make it 15 goals in 17 starts in all competitions this season for Rangers. But he did precious little else.

Then again, it could be argued he doesn't have to do anything else.

McCulloch is a fully-fledged member of Boyd's fan club and reckons the former Kilmarnock hitman's goals total is up there with what some of the best in Europe have to offer.

He said: "Kris is phenomenal and I don't think there is anybody in Europe who has the goalscoring record he has. Every time he comes into the side, he scores.

"It seems a strange thing to say all he does is score goals but that's what he does best and he's amazing.

I know he gets a bit of stick as people look at the negatives but I just look at the positives. He's one of the best at scoring goals."

Rangers may well be looking to McCulloch to add to his goals tally on Wednesday night when they face Greek side Panathinaikos in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.

He has two European goals to his name this season after netting against FK Zeta and Lyon.

With Jean-Claude Darcheville suspended for the Panathinaikos match, McCulloch revealed he will be ready to go it alone up front should Smith revert to the one-man-up-front policy for home European ties.

But while he's happy to take on any role asked of him, the UEFA Cup is not his top goal.

McCulloch said: "Everybody knows the main priority at this club is to win the league.

"If we can get a run going in the UEFA Cup then brilliant, we'll take it. Wednesday is another big game at Ibrox and we'll be going out to win.

"If we get the right result it will set us up nicely for maybe going into the next round.

"We want to win every game we play and as long as we're winning the team spirit here is good.

"As long as we can keep that spirit we will not be too far away in all competitions.

"I'll play anywhere for Rangers and if the manager asks me to go up front against Panathinaikos then I'll do it.

"This is such a big game and I'll just be delighted to be playing, no matter what position.

"I've scored a couple of European goals this season and that's been quite good but it means nothing yet."
