Aberdeen 2-1 Kilmarnock

Dec 10 2007

LEE MILLER shook off two cheat claims to cap Aberdeen's stunning comeback and send Kilmarnock to their fifth straight defeat.

The striker's 75th-minute winner was his seventh goal of the season and hauled Dons to within five points of third spot and a European place again.

But twice Miller was accused of diving - the first earned him a booking from Willie Collum, the second crucially earned Jimmy Calderwood's side the penalty that gave thema foothold back in a game they looked certs to lose.

David Fernandez's opener in 27 minutes was well deserved as Killie drilled into Dons before the break.

But after Barry Nicholson's spot-kick levelled things and the injury jinx struck again for Jim Jefferies' men it was only a matter of time before Aberdeen bagged the points.

Miller said: "I was frustrated to be booked in the first half because there was a bit of contact in the box and I went down but there was no way I was looking for a penalty.

"And the penalty in the second half? These things happen, there was a little contact in the box, the footing wasn't easy all day and from a striker's point of view, yes, I thought it was a definite penalty.

"Kilmarnock are obviously going to argue their case though.

"If fouls like that happen elsewhere on the pitch they're given. Either way it was a great result because Killie had us on the ropes for a long time.

"It moves us towithin five points of third place and given some of our league form it shows you how much we have picked up in recent weeks."

It's now five wins and a draw in their last six home league games - but for a long time Pittodrie looked a million miles from a fortress.

Both sides were missing seven top-team starters but barring a shaky first 10 minutes, Kilmarnock adjusted best to their makeshift line-up.

Dons were lucky to stay on level terms and keep 11 men on the park in the 17th minute when Lee Mair bundled Colin Nish over right on the edge of the box.

Ref Collum copped out of even giving a free-kick, presumably on the basis that he knew Mair would have to go with Nish homing in on goal.

As you'd expect, that sent Jefferies into a rage - but it wasn't long before his team put a smile back on his face with a brilliantly worked goal.

Danny Invincibile picked out the marauding Jamie Hammill on the right, he touched back to James Fowler and Fernandez produced a text-book headed finish to a wonderful cross.

It was well deserved and always going to come down that right flank where Sone Aluko's apparent lack of a reverse gear was giving Hammill a field day pushing on from right-back.

Dons did have their moments before the break.

Chris Maguire forced a desperate corner with a flashing shot across goal, Lee Miller almost squeezed a neat near-post header past Alan Combe.

Frazer Wright then provided some heart attack material with a header that looped inches over his own bar.

But it wasn't enough for the frustrated Calderwood and after a half-time rocket he hooked Aluko and Maguire in favour of the experience of Stevie Lovell and Scott Severin.

The difference was immediate and the hunger that was missing was suddenly there.

Just before the hour, stopper Chris Clark was denied by a magnificent piece of committed defending by the Australian striker Invincibile.

But it was one he paid for a few minutes later.

And by then the Dons were level again - thanks to a controversial decision by Collum.

Miller, harshly booked for diving in the first half, went down under a clumsy challenge from Ryan O'Leary.

Collum pointed to the spot, Killie's defenders pointed the finger straight at the Dons striker.

Nicholson buried the spot-kick but the goal was only half the blow for Jefferies as he lost two more crucial stars.

Invinci bile and the outstanding Wright limped off and the changes were to prove their side's death knell. Killie were suddenly forced to re-shape their defence.

Striker Gary Wales ended up at left-back, Tim Clancy was shipped in to centre-half.

And they were both spectators as Aberdeen's winner came through them both.

Derek Young's sweet cross from the right flank beat Wales, and Miller rose above Clancy and buried a great header past keeper Combe into the net.

WILLIECOLLUMhad two big decisions, neither of which went Killie's way. Inconsistent. Rating: 5/10.
