Alexander has the right to appeal and will announce his intentions at a press conference today. Last night his lawyer Leo Martin said: "Rowan's surprised over the manner in which he found out he'd been sacked.
"Stephen Baillie, the union representative appointed to handle his case by the Managers and Coaches Association, was not informed by Gretna about the decision they had taken.
"The matter was destined to end up in the courts and the full facts and circumstances surrounding the way Rowan's been treated are now a step closer to being divulged."
Alexander signed a five-year contract in 2006 but the parties fell out when he was asked to be examined by a psychologist, who stated he was fit for work.
