Scouts Eye Up Scott

Dec 5 2007

By John Gardner, Daily Record

FALKIRK'S teenage midfield star Scott Arfield is attracting interest from English clubs.

The 19-year-old has been a big hit for the Bairns since making his debut as a second-half substitute against Gretna on the opening day of the season.

Arfield has missed just one league match this term and manager John Hughes is delighted at the way the youngster has proved he can cope with the demands of life in the SPL.

His impressive form for the Bairns earned him international recognition and he made his first appearance for the Scotland Under-21s in last month's 4-0 victory over Slovenia.

Arfield's growing reputation has now alerted clubs south of the border and the kid has been watched several times in recent games.

Hughes said: "I'm well aware that there have been scouts from English clubs lurking in the stands lately to watch Scott.

"One or two of them have asked if he can go down on trial with them but I believe he's past that stage. It's clear to see how good he is just by watching him play."

Arfield was in fine form when Falkirk dismantled St Mirren in a 5-1 victory at Love Street at the weekend and Hughes reckons there are few better young players in Scotland at the moment.

He added: "I think it's fair to say that Scott is the most promising young talent in Scottish football at present.

"He's totally fearless and his confidence is sky high. He has a superb attitude."
