SCOTT ARFIELD last night vowed to be a Scotland regular for years. Falkirk's teenage midfielder has again been called up by Scotland Under-21 boss Maurice Malpas for the European Championship tie with Slovenia a week tomorrow. The 19-year-old has described his meteoric rise this season as phenomenal and wants to keep soaring. Arfield made his Falkirk debut in the opening-day 4-0 win over Gretna and has missed only one SPL game since. Such was the impression he made for John Hughes' side that he earned a shock call for the Under-21 friendly against Holland last month and played the last 12 minutes of the 4-0 defeat. Arfield said: "I've had a good couple of months. My first call-up was beyond belief. I didn't think it would come so soon. Hopefully I can maintain it and be there for a long time. "It was phenomenal pulling on the dark blue of my country, especially against a team like Holland. "I was on the pitch for only about 12 minutes but the experience you get from playing against players like theirs is unbelievable. I imagine playing 90 minutes would be brilliant. "I only turned 19 last week so hopefully I can keep playing for Falkirk and the people involved with Scotland will keep seeing me and there are more caps to come." Arfield admits his aim this season was to make the first-team match-day squad and play as often as possible but is surprised at his rise to first-team regular. He said: "I played pre-season in Holland and came in for friendlies against Rangers and Ajax. "But to be starting in the first team is phenomenal." |
