AWAY from the European stage, yesterday's 5-1 win at Pittodrie was Celtic's best performance of the season. I thought they were absolutely fantastic. The big question was could Celtic sustain their level of performance from the Kilmarnock game the week before. The Hoops answered that in emphatic style. Pittodrie is always a difficult venue to go to and it was a five-star display from Gordon Strachan's men. And what can you say about Aiden McGeady? He was absolutely outstanding again, scored a brilliant goal and deservedly won the Man of the Match award. He is terrorising defenders just now and scoring goals in the process. And the trickery to set up Scott McDonald for his second goal was just sublime. If that was Ronaldinho, everybody would be raving about it and they would be showing the clip all the time. For me there are two candidates for the Scottish Footballer of the Year award and they are McDonald and McGeady. If McGeady can keep up this standard until the end of the season he will win. The only down side for Celtic is they remain four points adrift of Rangers. Rangers are on a decent run but Celtic need to build on their last two victories and strive to achieve that standard every game between now and the end of the season. The gulf between the Old Firm and the rest has widened again and the Old Firm matches will settle the destination of the championship. Celtic need to remain unbeaten in those matches to make the title pendulum swing back to them. I watched Rangers beat Falkirk on Saturday by doing just enough. Celtic's 5-1 result gives the players and fans a lift whereas Rangers had to grind out another victory. Celtic's last two performances have lifted everybody and they are looking at the table differently. Two weeks ago they might have thought they were struggling to hang on to Rangers' coat-tails. Now they will be extremely confident of overtaking their great rivals at the top and can't wait for the next game. Celtic are the team in form and that is a result of their business in the January transfer window. Georgios Samaras scored in his first game against Kilmarnock and made another good impression against Aberdeen yesterday. And Barry Robson scored with his first touch against the Dons. The Celtic squad is stronger with these two new signings and they look to have a wee edge to them at the moment. Rangers have brought in Steve Davis and Christian Dailly to help offset the loss of Alan Hutton but the Light Blues' team has been weakened to an extent. The focus for Rangers switches to the UEFA Cup this week and the game against Panathinaikos can give everybody at the club a lift. European nights for the Old Firm are special and this is a chance for Rangers to keep their momentum going. The only problem will be if they lose to Panathinaikos and the confidence dips. Rangers need a wee spark and need to do what Celtic have done and thump a team. I am not saying they will do that to the Greek side but I believe Rangers will win on Wednesday. It will be very tight but a 1-0 victory for Rangers would be a great result to take to Greece for the second leg. As told to Anthony Haggerty |
