YouTube channel for court judgments

03:05, Jan 21 2013

The decisions of judges in the Supreme Court will be made available to watch on YouTube.

A dedicated channel for the UK's highest court has been set up on the video sharing website, and five-minute summaries of appeals will be posted shortly after they are read out in court from Wednesday morning.

A back catalogue of 25 judgments from the last legal term, October to December 2012, is to be made public.

The move follows a live web streaming service of proceedings and is designed to make the work of the Supreme Court "as accessible as possible".

Lord Neuberger, president of the Supreme Court, said: "Demand for our live web stream of proceedings has far outstripped our expectations. Around 20,000 people watch each month. Making our judgment summaries available as a video archive seemed the obvious next step.

"We hope this new service will open up another window on our work and the reasoning behind our decisions, and broaden our audience."

The brief summaries, written by the judges themselves, are designed to explain the background to each appeal, the decision the court has reached and the reasons for that decision.

They have been delivered in court since the Supreme Court opened in 2009.
