Woman, 71, 'killed in dogs attack'

04:05, Nov 1 2012

A pensioner is believed to have died after she was mauled by a pack of dogs that she had gone to feed.

The 71-year-old woman, named in reports as Gloria Knowles, was found dead with multiple injuries at a house in Morden, south London, on Tuesday.

Police were called to the property following the incidents and seized five dogs including two Bordeaux bulldogs, two American bulldogs and a mongrel.

The great-grandmother had gone to the garden of the property in Rutland Drive and was feeding the pet dogs belonging to her daughter when she was mauled, according to reports.

She also suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Neighbours told reporters they had heard screams and barking coming from the rear of the house before emergency workers arrived.

Mrs Knowles reportedly lived next door to her daughter and was feeding the animals as a favour.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out at St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, to establish how she died.

Scotland Yard said none of the seized animals are banned breeds and that no arrests have been made in connection with the tragedy.

A force spokesman said confirmed an investigation is under way to establish the cause of death and said the woman had sustained "a number of injuries". There was a police presence at the property while two adjoining semi-detached houses remained cordoned off. Family members were too distressed to speak.
