Two hurt as police car catches fire

11:05, Jul 21 2012

Two police officers needed hospital treatment after the police car they were travelling in hit a traffic island and caught fire.

The two male constables were responding to an incident when the accident happened in Broomfield, near Chelmsford, Essex, at about 9.30pm on Friday.

An Essex Police spokesman said the officers were taken by ambulance to Broomfield Hospital after the crash, which happened in Main Road, close to the junction with Ridley Road.

The passenger was later discharged while the driver was kept in overnight as a precaution.

No other vehicles were involved and the road was closed until around 2am.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact officers at the Dunmow Road policing unit on 101.
