Sir Stirling 'feeling better'

03:05, Mar 13 2010

Motor racing veteran Sir Stirling Moss has thanked wellwishers who wrote to him after he fell three floors down a lift shaft and broke both ankles.

In a video posted on his website, the 80-year-old referred to the accident as a "shunt" and said he would be "bouncing back" as quickly as possible.

Sir Stirling is recovering in a London hospital after surgery on both his feet following the accident at his Mayfair home last Saturday.

He also suffered four broken bones in his foot and four chipped vertebrae when the lift door opened at the wrong time and he stepped into the empty shaft.

Plates and pins were used to secure the bones in his ankles.

The former racing star, who won 16 grands prix between 1951 and 1961, said: "I would like to thank everybody out there who has been kind enough to write to me, email me or whatever after the shunt I had at the weekend.

"I am not feeling great, but I am feeling better.

"Obviously I am going to take it easy, which is a bit of a bore. But still, I should be bouncing back as soon as I possibly can.

"Hopefully that means I will be meeting a lot of you in the next few months. Thanks for all your wishes."
