Man jailed for murdering child

14:05, Sep 13 2012

A 22-year-old man has been jailed for life for the murder of a child who he battered to death in front of his mother.

Peter Cawser inflicted more than 70 injuries on three-year-old Dylan Crean in a sustained and brutal attack that took place in the child's bedroom.

Leicester Crown Court heard that Cawser "flipped out" and attacked Dylan, punching and kicking him, before turning on his girlfriend and the youngster's mother, Katie, as she tried to protect her son.

Midway through the attack Cawser paused to close the windows of the family home in Edward Street in Albert Village, Swadlincote, so that neighbours could not hear Ms Crean's screams.

Sentencing him to life in prison to serve a minimum of 18 years, Judge Michael Pert QC told Cawser that Dylan's response of "okay" to Cawser telling him not to be naughty or make a mess just before the attack was no defence.

The judge said: "What happened next was nothing in any part to do with the behaviour of Dylan or the behaviour of his mother. It was the vindictive and uncontrollable rage of an adult man against a three-year-old child. You embarked upon a sustained, brutal attack upon this young child."

Dylan was found by paramedics unconscious and in an unresponsive state at the family home following the attack on August 30 last year.

He was taken to Derby Royal Infirmary before being transferred to the intensive care unit at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham where he died in his mother's arms the next day.

Doctors found he had suffered a catastrophic brain injury from head injuries, which was not survivable.

Prosecutor Sally Howes QC told the court a paediatrician, who had extensive experience, said he had "never seen such a sustained physical attack on a child."
