Girl badly hurt in road collision

10:05, Aug 11 2012

A young girl is seriously ill in hospital after she was injured by a car that left the road and hit her as she walked along the street.

The 11-year-old was walking with a woman on Warstones Drive in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, when a Nissan car crashed and collided with the pair.

West Midlands Police said they were called to the incident at 6.45pm on Friday and both the girl and woman were taken to hospital by air ambulance, where the child remains in a serious but stable condition. The woman suffered no serious injury.

The driver of the car was also taken to hospital following the incident as a precaution.

A spokesman for the force said: "The incident happened at the junction of Warstones Drive and Hamble Road, with the Nissan Almera car leaving the road and colliding with a wall, two pedestrians and parked cars, before coming to rest in a garden."

Inspector Mark Watkins, from the force Collision Investigation Unit, appealed for anyone in the Warstones Drive area who witnessed the crash to contact police.

He said: "The young girl has suffered serious injuries and we have launched a full investigation into how the car came to leave the road and collide with her and the other pedestrian.

"We urge anyone who can assist us to come forward."

The road was closed for several hours whilst the vehicle was recovered and inquiries were made at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and speak to the Collision Investigation Unit.
