62 arrested over pre-match violence

23:05, Mar 16 2013

More than 60 people have been arrested after riot police had to be sent in before a non-league football match.

Warwickshire Police said officers dealt with "violent disorder" on what had been "a particularly challenging day" after problems at several pubs in Nuneaton.

Officers from three forces and the British Transport Police had to be brought in shortly before 10.30am after reports of trouble. The arrests were made before a non-league fixture between home side Nuneaton Town FC and Lincoln City FC.

Police said they were monitoring a series of incidents and later sent officers in full protective clothing to begin arresting dozens of people on suspicion of violent disorder at the The Granby pub in the town centre from 3.20pm.

Officers from Warwickshire were backed by police support units (PSUs) from West Mercia Police and West Midlands Police. A total of 62 suspects were taken by coach to Nuneaton police station where they were being interviewed.

Chief Inspector Adrian Knight, in charge of the policing operation, said: "Police officers responded to reports of disorder at a number of public houses in the town, and were deployed in full protective equipment for their own safety.

"PSUs from three forces were all deployed and were successful in containing the disorder and protecting the safety and well-being of the general public. This operation was a true collaboration utilising resources from across the region.

"I am extremely grateful to our regional colleagues from West Mercia, West Midlands and British Transport Police for their support in this operation - it has been a particularly challenging day.

"It was important to take a positive approach from the start of the operation and as a result of that, a significant number of people have been arrested for serious offences and will now be processed."

Nuneaton went on to win the Blue Square Bet Premier League fixture 1-0.
