'Saddened' Winslet and Mendes split

06:05, Mar 16 2010

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and her director husband Sam Mendes have separated after nearly seven years of marriage.

The split, which occurred earlier this year, has left the pair "saddened" but was said to be "entirely amicable", a spokesman said.

Winslet, 34, and Mendes, 10 years her senior, married in 2003 and were one of the film world's best-known couples. It was the Reading-born actress's second marriage.

Keith Schilling of legal firm Schillings said: "Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year.

"The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children."

Winslet, who won the best actress Oscar last year for her role in The Reader, was not with her husband at either this year's Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles or the Baftas in London.

She is said to be in Mexico at the moment, while Mendes is reportedly in New England. He is also an Oscar winner, picking up the best director award for American Beauty in 2000.

The couple tied the knot in a secret ceremony in the West Indies in May 2003. They have a son, Joe, six.

Winslet also has a daughter, Mia, from her first marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton.

The pair worked together on Mendes's fourth film, Revolutionary Road, in 2008. He said of the experience: "It was very exhilarating to finally work with my wife and I saw a side of her I just didn't know."
