Lady Gaga has enjoyed double chart success as her album and latest single rose to the number one spots.
The singer, known for her unconventional dress sense, saw Telephone go to the top of the singles chart.
It has a promotional video which is more than nine minutes long and features a lesbian kiss, swearing and a story of mass murder.
The previous week's most popular single Pass Out by Tinie Tempah fell to number two, and Rihanna's Rude Boy to three. Clean cut teen star Justin Bieber's hit Baby was at number four, and Starry Eyed by Ellie Goulding at five.
There were three new entries in the top forty this week - Hot by Inna at number eight, Bad Boy by Skepta at number 26 and True Colours by the cast of Glee at number 35.
Songs from high school drama Glee have frequently featured in the charts since the series came to UK screens in January.
Lady Gaga's album The Fame rose four places to number one in the album chart, followed by a collection of songs by the cast of Glee - which went from 91 to two. Boyzone were at number three with Brother, Gorillaz' Plastic Beach was at four and The Element Of Freedom by Alicia Keys at five.
There were two new entries in the album chart, the highest of which was Sweet 7 by Sugababes. Some of the vocals on the album had to be re-recorded after founding member Keisha Buchanan acrimoniously left the band in September. She was replaced by Jade Ewen, who represented the UK at Eurovision last year.
The other new entry was White Stripes' Under Great White Northern Lights which went in at number 25.
