Teenager seriously hurt in attack

A teenager is in a serious condition in hospital following a suspected assault.

The 16-year-old wandered into a leisure centre in Kilmarnock at around 9.50pm on Friday night and told staff he had been assaulted in a nearby park.

Emergency services arrived a short time later the and teenager was taken to Crosshouse Hospital, and then transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow where he remains in a serious condition with a head injury.

He is understood to be conscious, but police have been unable to interview him due to the nature of his injuries.

Staff at St Josephs Leisure Centre informed police that the teenager said he had been assaulted in Kay Park, but they had not seen his attackers.

At this time there are no descriptions of any suspects.

Detective Inspector Scott McClelland from Kilmarnock CID said: "Inquiries are at a very early stage and we haven't yet been able to interview this young man to find out how he came about his inquiries.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in Kay Park last night and has any information about what happened to this man to contact officers as soon as possible."
