Sports scheme to help youngsters

A sports programme to help disadvantaged young people in Scotland, as well as those in some of the poorest countries in the world, has been launched.

Cyclist Graeme Obree was among the guests as Sport Relief chief executive Kevin Cahill announced the £5 million Home and Away programme, paid for by the fundraising body and the Scottish Government.

In Glasgow, Sport Relief visited North United Communities, a programme that aims to keep young people away from under-age drinking and other dangerous lifestyle choices.

Obree, twice world cycling champion, said he believes sport can inspire young people.

He said: "Sport and a sense of community can make people feel better about themselves. I'm attacking the world land-speed record on a bike, which is 83mph. You train like fury but you hope to inspire people. If you've got a dream, a vision, go for it."

Sport Relief has raised £2.5 million for the project, which has been matched by the Scottish Government's health and international development funds.

Half of the money will fund projects in Scotland and the other half will be spent on health and enterprise initiatives in countries such as Malawi in Africa.

Mr Cahill said: "The projects we're able to fund with Sport Relief cash are crucial to communities like the one we're visiting today. We're seeing kids who are having issues in school, where sport can teach them discipline, self-respect and how to work in a team."

Scotland's share of the £5 million will be used across a range of social issues, helping young people with poor mental health, older people suffering neglect or abuse and support for children who are sexually exploited and or trafficked.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "In difficult economic times, working in partnership with the developing world to alleviate poverty is more important than ever. That is why I am so delighted that we are working with Sport Relief on this programme which highlights our joint determination to fight deprivation at home and abroad."
