Spit charge fan banned from matches

A football fan has been banned from attending matches around the UK for a year after assaulting a member of security staff at a game.

Chris Whitton, 20, was convicted of assaulting a male security supervisor by spitting on him at the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League match between Hearts and Hibs at Tynecastle on August 28 last year.

The Hibs fan was given a 150-hour community payback order and a one-year football banning order (FBO) at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Whitton, from Edinburgh, was convicted of the offence on September 18 after a trial.

Under the terms of the FBO, he is banned from all regulated football matches throughout the whole of the UK for one year.

Faith Millar, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service's football liaison prosecutor for the East of Scotland, said: "I am sure the prosecution service will have the full support of true football fans in our commitment to help drive out supporter violence in any form from football matches.

"The vast majority attend matches across the country to enjoy the game.

"I hope that the small minority who resort to violence will take heed of our robust action and our zero tolerance warning."
