Soccer fans urged to drink sensibly

Scottish football supporters have been encouraged to drink responsibly and get behind the national team in the run-up to the first 2014 World Cup qualifier.

Scotland are aiming for victory over Serbia at Hampden on Saturday and manager Craig Levein wants the fans to make the game a memorable occasion.

He said: "The start of a World Cup qualifying campaign is an exciting time for the team and our fantastic supporters. Hearing the roar of the crowd will give the boys a huge lift and I urge all fans to be safe, be responsible and get right behind the team."

Levein's side then play Macedonia in Glasgow on Tuesday evening.

Police are also urging fans to drink in moderation and have a good time.

Chief Superintendent Andy Bates said: "As we start on the road to Brazil 2014, I would encourage supporters to come and cheer on the team and be part of the Hampden Roar, but when it comes to alcohol, please don't overdo it.

"If you want to have a drink before the game, please do sensibly. Remember it is against the law to drink in a public place in Glasgow and you can't take alcohol into the stadium.

"If you turn up drunk you will be refused entry and could be arrested. My message is clear: don't let alcohol ruin the occasion and let's look forward to what should be an exciting and memorable match."
