Prisoner fled court through window

Police are hunting a prisoner who escaped from custody by climbing out of a window at a court.

The man absconded from Tain Sheriff Court in the Highlands on Tuesday afternoon.

He is not thought to be a threat to the public.

A police spokesman said: "Northern Constabulary can confirm they are assisting their partners at G4S following an incident at Tain Sheriff Court on Tuesday afternoon.

"A man absconded from custody and left the premises. Police are currently making inquiries and attempting to trace the man."

The force said that the man was the responsibility of security firm G4S at the time.

It is believed the prisoner escaped through a window in the building.

A G4S spokesman said: "We are carrying out a full investigation into the incident that took place yesterday at Tain Sheriff Court.

"We will be working closely with the Scottish Prison Service and relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances."
