MSPs to welcome education funding

An extra £30 million in funding for post-16 education and training is to be welcomed by MSPs.

Youth Employment Minister Angela Constance will lead a debate in Parliament on the Scottish Government's youth employment strategy, seeking support for an "all-government, all-Scotland approach" to provide opportunities for young people to enter the workplace.

Parliament will also be invited to welcome the allocation of £30 million of extra money over and above the Scottish Government's annual funding of around £1.5 billion for post-16 education and training.

Unveiling the youth employment strategy last week, First Minister Alex Salmond said it is designed to prevent young people emerging from school merely to become "unemployment statistics".

According to Mr Salmond, the Scottish Government is committed to doing everything in its power to reduce youth joblessness. The plan is to encourage collaboration between the Scottish Government, Parliament and key economic stakeholders to reduce youth unemployment.

Mr Salmond said: "Our key commitment is to those young people who yearn to be productive. No young person should go through school only to become an unemployment statistic at the age of 16. We will not allow that in Scotland and more must and will be done."

Speaking last week, Ms Constance said the Scottish Government will support more young people with the introduction of the Opportunities for All programme.

She said: "This will take a strong existing package of education and training support and ensure that every 16-19 year old not already in work, education or training will have access to a suitable place in learning or training."
