MP named as Scots Lib Dems' deputy

Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has been appointed deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats in Scotland.

Leader Willie Rennie said he would be working with Mr Carmichael "to make sure that Scotland's voice is loud and clear in the UK Government".

The MP succeeds Jo Swinson, who stood down to focus on a new role as equalities minister at Westminster.

Mr Carmichael said: "At a time when the SNP are removing local control over critical services, choosing secrecy over transparency in government and pursuing separatism at the expense of jobs and growth, the need for a strong Scottish Liberal Democrat voice is as urgent as ever.

"As deputy leader I look forward to working with Willie, party members and activists across the country to keep Alex Salmond honest and hold his government to account."

Mr Carmichael, who is deputy chief whip in the UK Government, has been MP for Orkney and Shetland since 2001.
