Man swept into sea while fishing

A man has died after being swept into the sea while fishing, coastguard said.

The man was with a group fishing from rocks on the north east coast at Arbroath when he was swept in, Aberdeen coastguard said.

The incident happened at around 12.20pm on Sunday.

The man, who has not been identified, was recovered by the Arbroath inshore lifeboat.

A Tayside Police spokesman said: "At 12.30pm today, approximately one mile east of Arbroath, a 49-year-old man was swept into the sea by a wave while fishing off the rocks.

"Two other fishermen with him contacted Aberdeen Coastguard and life boats were launched from Arbroath and Carnoustie.

"Aberdeen Coastguard maintained contact with the witnesses and the man was located quickly, however despite efforts to resuscitate him, he died at the scene."
