A young man has died following a head-on collision between two cars.
The 24-year-old, who was driving a Citroen Saxo, had to be cut free from his vehicle by firefighters after the crash on the A7, near Galashiels in the Borders, at around 5.20pm on Wednesday.
He was taken by ambulance to Borders General Hospital, but later died of his injuries. The man's family was at the hospital when he died.
The driver of the other car, a Skoda Octavia, was taken to the same hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Police said he was being kept in overnight for observation.
The A7 was closed for around five and a half hours to allow a crash investigation to be carried out.
Lothian and Borders Police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them and in particular they are keen to speak to three occupants of a works vehicle, possibly a flatbed van, who stopped at the scene to give assistance and contacted the emergency services.
Anyone with information should contact the force on 0131 311 3131.
