Life term for pensioner's killer

A man who murdered a pensioner by setting fire to his flat and leaving him to die has been handed a life sentence, the Crown Office said. Martin Olej, 22, attacked 69-year-old John McCulloch at his home in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, on August 14 2009. He then doused the property with lighter fluid and set fire to it, before fleeing the scene. Prosecutors said Mr McCulloch died from inhaling the smoke and fumes. Olej was previously found guilty of murder following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT At the High Court in Edinburgh, he was sentenced to life in prison. Fiona Holligan, procurator fiscal at Greenock, said: "This was a tragic murder of a vulnerable pensioner. "Martin Olej had gone to Mr McCulloch's flat for a drink but ended up attacking him, pouring lighter fluid on to his carpet and setting it alight before fleeing the scene and leaving the victim to his fate. "I am glad that the perpetrator has been brought to justice for this."
