Game called off after power failure

Around 250 properties were affected and a Scottish Premier League football match called off because of a power cut.

The power failure, in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, occurred at about 2.50pm.

Motherwell FC's fixture against Dundee United was postponed when the power went out at Fir Park stadium 10 minutes before it was due to kick off.

The home club initially delayed the start of the game, but confirmed soon after that it had decided to postpone the match for safety reasons.

A spokesman for ScottishPower said the power outage was caused by a fault in one of its underground cables in the area.

"It affected about 250 properties in total," he said.

"Engineers were out straight away to fix it and everyone was reconnected within one hour.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."
