Food and drink exports exceed £5bn

Food and drink exports from Scotland totalled an "impressive" £5.26 billion in the last year .

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said the sector had made a "significant contribution to our economy during a challenging economic time".

France was the top destination for Scottish produce, with food and drink worth £728 million in the year ending September 2012.

The country was also the biggest market for Scottish food, with £257 million of exports over the 12 months.

Meanwhile, £543 million of Scottish food and drink exports went to the USA - including £478 million of drink, making America the largest market for this.

Mr Lochhead said: "Thanks to our wonderful natural larder, Scottish produce is to be found in some of the world's best restaurants and on the finest dining tables.

"Both at home and abroad, chefs and food connoisseurs appreciate the high quality of Scottish food and drink - whether that's our Scotch beef, haggis, dairy products or a single malt.

"With nations as diverse as France and Russia enjoying Scottish food, it's clear that there is an appetite for our produce which stretches far beyond our borders."

But he added: "We're not resting on our laurels. We're working hard to build on existing markets and develop new ones. I recently led a successful trade mission to the Far East where Scottish produce was very well received and I look forward to seeing the results of this in future."
