Flare tribute to coastguard station

Red flares have been let off by campaigners protesting against the planned closure of a coastguard station.

Around 40 boats gathered near the Navy Buildings in Greenock as a show of support for those working at Clyde Coastguard, due to shut by the end of the year.

A variety of vessels, including sailing boats and kayaks, were involved in tonight's demonstration.

The station closure comes as part of the overhaul announced by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition in Westminster. Under the plans, eight stations will shut, including Clyde and Forth.

John Houston, founder of the Save Clyde Coastguard campaign, said it was important to show how much locals appreciated the staff at the station.

He said: "First and foremost tonight was for the coastguard. We wanted to say thanks for all their years of service.

"This closure makes no sense whatsoever. It is clear as day we need this coastguard on the Clyde and the decision is just so short-sighted."

Mr Houston said the campaign informed members of the public before the demonstration that red flares were being used.
