Council backs Youth Olympics bid

Glasgow's bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games has been formally approved by the city council.

The Scottish Government gave its backing to the bid last week and plans will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee next week.

Glasgow City Council's executive committee rubber-stamped the plans and a budget of almost £235 million, the majority of which will be from Government funding, has been set aside to host the event.

Organisers are hoping to build a sporting legacy in the country following the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow in 2014.

Sport minister Shona Robison said: "Winning the Games will build on the sporting legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games, showcase Glasgow in over 200 countries and open up the city to new tourism and business opportunities, inspiring a new generation of Scottish sporting talent to be the best they can be."

The Glasgow bid is competing against Buenos Aires, Rotterdam and Poznan. The winner will be announced next summer.

The regeneration of an area of the city is being brought forward as part of the bid. Sighthill, in the north of city, will be home to the athletes' village if the bid is successful, but building work will begin before any host city is chosen because of the timescale of the bid.

Council leader Gordon Matheson said: "What a tantalising prospect it is to have the possibility of bringing the Olympic Rings and all they represent back to the UK in 2018.

"Glasgow has built a compelling case for staging the Youth Olympic Games in 2018 which gives us all the chance to continue to inspire our young people to become champions in their lives and build on the legacy already being created from staging the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

"This city is ready to stage the Youth Olympic Games. We are now the ninth best sporting city in the world and we have outstanding venues and infrastructure. Winning the bid would not only further enhance our reputation on the world stage but also continue to sustain and create jobs in our tourism, creative, event and service industries which are so vital to the city's economy."
