City hosts world pipes spectacular

Thousands of pipers from around the world are descending on Scotland's biggest city as a week-long festival gets under way.

Around 30,000 visitors and 8,000 pipers, drummers and performers are expected to be in Glasgow for a week of traditional music.

The city will host the Piping Live! Glasgow International Piping Festival until Sunday, with the World Pipe Band Championships, known as The Worlds, taking place at Glasgow Green on Saturday August 11.

The World Championships have been held in the city for almost 70 years while Piping Live! is entering its ninth year.

Last year's championship winners were Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band from Belfast, which will defend its title against bands from countries including Scotland, Canada, Denmark and the USA.

Piping Live! features musicians from 10 European countries, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Italy and Sweden, with almost 150 free and ticketed events.

The programme has workshops, masterclasses, ceilidhs, concerts and street performance.

The city's George Square will be at the centre of the event, with a line-up of acts taking to the stage.
