Airport passenger numbers up 11.3%

A Scottish airport experienced its busiest October for five years, boosted by travellers jetting off during the school holidays.

Aberdeen airport handled 316,666 passengers last month, an increase of 11.3% compared with the same period last year.

The latest figures show domestic passenger numbers were up 10.2% and international traffic rose 16.2%. The number of helicopter passengers was up by 6.6%.

During the school break, October 12 saw one of the busiest days in the airport's history. The rise meant the airport saw its busiest October for five years and the second busiest on record.

Meanwhile, Glasgow airport saw almost 700,000 passengers travelling through the terminal, up 4.6% on last October's figure.

The airport saw demand for domestic travel grow by 5.8%, with international traffic up 3.5%.

Bosses said the school holiday week combined with new domestic routes ensured it was a busy month while Celtic's away Champions League fixture against Barcelona also boosted outbound traffic numbers.

However, Edinburgh airport experienced a decline in passenger numbers.

Some 844,000 people travelled through the airport in October, a drop of 2.8% on the previous year.

Domestic passengers made up 405,000 of those going through the airport, which was a decline of 0.6%, while international travellers accounted for 439,000 of the total, down 4.7%.
