VPL is never a pretty sight, especially on your wedding day. So we've put together some handy hints to help you find the right undergarments to suit your gown.
Backless or strapless gowns
Strapless boned bustiers or strapless multi-way bras are good for those with small to average busts. "If you are above a DD, you might want to try stick on cups," says Sharron Amey, lingerie buyer for David Morgan. "They aren't as glamourous, but if that's what you need to do to make your dress look great, then I'm afraid you'll have to bite the bullet!" For large busts try Braza, £7.99 for 5 pairs; Stay Cups, £9.99, are suitable for smaller busts and are re-usable.
Boned dresses or boned bustiers
Contrary to popular belief, you can wear boned underwear with a boned dress. Always choose a proper corseted basque, which has the boning stitched inside. Boning can range from rigid to quite flexible so choose one that is comfortable and sits well under the dress. Seam free underwear is another option.
Low V neck or deep cut dresses with sleeves
"Low cut dresses are designed to show off the cleavage, so go for a bust enhancing bra", says Sharron.
The Variable Cleavage Wonderbra, £24, is cut deep and has an adjustable string that allows you to have as little or as much cleavage as you want. Or try Wonderbra Ultra Bra Super Boost, £21 which is available up to an F cup.
Thin floaty material
"This can be every bride's nightmare. Embroidered, frilly numbers are out as they are clearly visible through the dress. Even stocking tops can show through," says Sharron. "Don't go for underwear that is the same colour as your dress as you'll get a build up of colour. Smooth skin-toned underwear, and sheer hold-ups instead of suspenders are your best bet. It may not be as pretty but you need to consider the end result."
Straight or fitted skirts
"Suspenders will show through the shape of the skirt, so opt for lacy, hold-up tights. There's no rule that says you have to wear hosiery. If it doesn't work or you aren't comfy then go without!" says Fran of Woodcocks.
What about briefs?
"Prepare yourself - the back of wedding briefs are generally bigger than normal knickers. You will be doing a lot of moving throughout the day - standing up, sitting down, dancing - so wedding briefs are designed to sit under your buttocks and stay there!" says Sharron. "Thongs are another option, but don't be tempted to buy something you wouldn't normally wear. The last thing you want to do is be caught fiddling with your underwear in the photos."
