I can still remember the opening scene of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II film. New York City, the camera pans down a busy street to crowded Roy's Pizza. Everyone inside and outside has an oversized slice of pizza in hand. Awesome.
As I write this I have not had the chance to see the new CGI TMNT film, but I have had the chance to play the Xbox 360 version of the game.
Ubisoft released the game on the 23rd March just over a week after the original arcade game was released on Xbox live arcade.
Playing TMNT reminded me of another Ubisoft game, but with a different look.
The platform jumping, poll swinging and wall running game feels very much like Prince of Persia, but at a much easier level - this is of course is a game marketed towards children.
There are many exciting, adrenalin pumping moments within the game, picture this, your running through a cave; which is falling in on itself. You reach a mass cavern and have to get to the other side, your only way across is to jump from one broken wooden ledge to another. You have to jump, jump and double jump your way across. The walls are caving in faster and faster - Are you going to make it out...
I really enjoyed the game overall, but there are a few problems you have to accept first. The camera view can be really annoying - you can not control it, resulting in miss judged jumps and wall runs.
I mentioned earlier that the game was easy - press 'A' for all your attacking needs. Even my 2 year old son could do that.
There are 16 levels in the game each taking around 15 to 20 min's to complete. It took me about 31 min's on one of the levels - I'm putting that down to the pesky fixed camera positions making you miss-judge distances and trial and error then becomes a big part of the game. This equates to around 5 ½ hours of game play. Which is not at all bad. When can you get a kid to sit longer that 10 min's?
The game play takes form as flash-backs. Each turtle telling the story how they came together. The cut scenes look great, but the in game graphics could have been turned up a notch - considering this is a game for the next-gen consoles.
There are a few negatives to the game, like no co-op or online play but it's still worth picking up for the fun factor.
