What's the atmosphere like?
In the 60s when the town hall next door doubled as a live music venue, visiting acts were always dropping in for a quick refreshment before the show - Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck and Ginger Baker among them. The nearest thing now to a celebrity would probably be one of the local rugby heroes or Hawick-born Chay Blyth when he's in town. On a Friday or Saturday night, it's standing room only.
What about the decor?
It's a long, narrow room with a beautiful dark wood gantry, a detailed replica of the original which was removed during "modernisation" years ago. The walls display rugby pictures and the old snug remains intact, complete with a serving hatch in the door. There is an intimate function room upstairs.
Who drinks here?
The pub has a faithful following who wouldn't be seen anywhere else. There are old timers perched in their favourite corner or propping up the bar while those of the younger generation who prefer a taste of old-style hospitality to modern and soulless alternatives feel comfortable here, too. It's the official local for Hawick United FC, the Callants' Club and the Operatic Society. There is a great old-fashioned sing-song on a Sunday night.
What are the staff like?
It's a close-knit affair with boss Kenny Lyle helped by Katrina, Irene and Roland, all members of his family, and bar manager Brian Armstrong. There is always a cheery welcome, no matter who is on duty.
Quiz night?
Occasionally, as well as domino tournaments which always raise money for worthwhile causes.
Any Food?
No. It's a sawdust-on-the-floor pub and with quality butchers and bakers' shops just a few paces away, no one objects if you bring in a hot pie or bridie.
Facts: Famed for its great selection of 60s music which is almost non-stop. McEwan's 70/-, £1.80; Miller Lager, £1.90; whisky and vodka (25ml), £1.10 (£1 for OAPs).
