BALGEDIE TOLL TAVERN

By Sunday Mail

What's the atmosphere like? The old coaching inn has stood on the same spot since the early 16th century. A busy chatter always fills the air.

Describe the decor It's a country tavern with low ceilings, oak beams, horse brasses, wood settles and works of art by local painter Frank Watson. A yard-long cigar is displayed in a box behind the bar.

Who drinks here? There's a faithful local following but the pub's reputation for good food draws tourists in. Regulars raise money for charities and the Ron Hain Memorial Trophy, a silver quaich, is given to the winner of an annual golf competition. What about the staff? Licensee Gillian Parsons is aided by assistant manageress Wendy Conway and general assistant Chris Hain. The kitchen is run by chef Alex Pollock and Nicol Robertson.

Is the food good?
