No, this isn't, as the lady from directory enquiries assumed, anything at all to do with the Social Security.

Instead, it is one of the shiniest new-style bars to have opened up in the city of Dundee lately. What can she have been thinking?

Maybe it was when I told her where it was. To be honest, the sort of people who go eating and drinking in the Social most definitely aren't short of a bob or two.

Sandwiched right between Dundee Repertory Theatre and DCA (Dundee Contemporary Arts), the place is certainly in the trendiest quarter of the city, as far as bars are concerned It's cheering to note, though, in this land of tortilla wraps, club sandwiches and Mexican nachos, that the kebab shop down the bottom of the road is still doing a roaring trade.

As far as the famous Scots diet goes, that's all the foreign influence we need.

Not that the svelte punters in the Social look like they've been overly-indulging.

For this is the place where all the beautiful people in Dundee hang out.

And it's refreshing to note even here there are places where it's possible to walk in and feel you're underdressed.

To go with the customers' dress sense, the bar is smartly turned-out.

Of course, it's only been open a little under a year and hasn't quite had time to get that lived-in feel everywhere eventually develops.

The Social, Dundee But still, the decor is so subtly minimalist you feel there's no danger of it becoming dated anytime soon.

There are one or two individual flourishes in among all the wood and metal, whichset the place off, such as the '70s-style square patterns embossed on the wall, or the comfy couches and stools that are just right for all that socialising.

Speaking of which, the Social has more than enough going on in the way of events to ensure it's worth hanging out in at any point of the week.

In addition to the usual food and drink (with a proper restaurant area just off to the left of the bar), Wednesday through to Sunday features a regular DJ line-up playing everything from house to soul at just the right level loud enough for a party atmosphere, but not too loud to hear yourself think.

There's also something a bit different for the quieter nights of the week.

On Mondays, the dancefloor/DJ area through the back is cleared for Live@Social a local band night, which is unusual for a style bar.

Then, on Tuesdays, it's the popular quiz night great fun, so we're told, but the flyer's cod-Dundonian promise that ``points mean nothing and prizes mean ahin'' does blow the place's icy cool just a little.

But Social recovers from that body-blow on weekends and comes into its own.

With nights like Socialise on Friday and Social Life on Saturday (we can only guess how much midnight oil was burned coming up with those titles), the place is a magnet for the stylish club kids of the city.

So it's a smart, fun, classy bar, then.

Where Dundee's reputation used to be as third fiddle to the big cities home of oldman boozers and meat-market clubs it's places like the Social that prove there's more than one Discovery to be had by the Tay.
