Sure, they were probably left by tourists who hadn't changed enough cash at
the bank. But it's more romantic to think that they came from globe-trotting
seadogs who had been blown ashore with a terrible thirst.
It could have all gone horribly wrong with the nautical clutter making the
Old Brewhouse look like a maritime equivalent of an Irish theme bar.
What makes it ring true are the odd exceptions to the sea-faring decor. In
particular, a bamboo pole hanging over the fire looks like a blowpipe.
That would certainly shift punters who needed some encouragement to go home
after last orders.
The Old Brewhouse is about as traditional as pubs come, but never let it be
said that they are afraid to experiment.
A few years ago, when flavoured vodkas were hugely fashionable, the Old
Brewhouse owners decided to have a crack at making their own.
Eager to create a taste sensation unique to Arbroath, they shoved a smokie in
a bottle of vodka and let it steep.
The ensuing concoction was said to be hugely popular with the Marines at the
nearby RM Condor base, which may explain why the squaddies had such little luck
with the local ladies.
You might just be able to get away with beer breath and still have a romantic
night.
But it's a sure bet that fish breath will never quite cut it as an
aphrodisiac, despite the Old Brewhouse's best attempts to promote it
otherwise.
