You've seen the adverts claiming that if Carlsberg owned a nightclub it would be the best nightclub in the world.
I'd make an educated guess that a Glaswegian bloke's idea of the best pub in the world would revolve around music, football and free booze.
It was 10 years ago Nicky Stewart opened his ideal pub, minus the free booze, and on a weekend night it's often hard to get through the door for like- minded punters. I guess two out of three ain't bad.
An Eastender born and bred, Nicky knew McChuill's in its time had once been used as stables and a banana warehouse. Now the cavern-like space is over-run with music and football fans.
Two parallel runs of brick-arched ceilings give it a jazz cellar feel, enhanced by evening candlelight and a collection of the owner's framed album covers on the walls - spanning everything from blues to punk.
Chunky wooden tables and chairs together with the terracotta and nicotine walls add a well worn character, but there's more interactive pub furniture in the table football and Simpsons pinball machine.
One large screen and three smaller TVs are on hand for more of the Simpsons product and, of course, the footie. Although Nicky is wary about those who don't think the game is all that beautiful, McChuill's is still a favourite watering hole for non- aggressive, riotous celebration - or commiseration - after games.
But the place is still very all-purpose, with table service during the day and children welcome - all meals are under £6.50.
Despite the underground feel, there's light at the end of the tunnel where patio doors lead on to a small beer garden.
McChuill's is the type of place where a party might break out at any given moment. Most Monday nights see a live jazz or folk band and every Friday and Saturday a rotation of regular bands - from rockabilly to Latin.
A regular pre-Barrowlands meeting place, it's got just the sort of atmosphere to get you revved up for a live concert.
Staff are friendly and the place has a huge contingent of contented regulars, which the owner doesn't take for granted unlike some other bars. If McChuill's took the same attitude, it would not have become the mini institution it is today - a place that punters make the effort to visit from across the city.
