Inn and out

By Jonathan Trew

AS well as meaning 'to eat' in Italian, Mangiare is the name of a new restaurant on Glasgow's Renfield Street.

Replacing the former Arigo Centro, Mangiare dips its toes into the buffet formula that has proved so popular with Chinese and Indian restaurants in the city.

The menu reads like an A to Z of popular Italian dishes and you would need to punch at least two new holes in your belt to just taste half of what is on offer.

Starters cover dishes such as mixed roast peppers in basil oil, tuna fish salads and garlic fried mushrooms.

Pizza, pasta and risotto bulk out the main courses along with choices like the roast herb pork loin, Milanese chicken fried in breadcrumbs and steamed mussels.

Prices range from £6 for lunch to £10 for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings.

THE Union Canal was vital for transporting cargo from one side of Scotland to the other. The M8 does the job that bit quicker these days but the canal's heritage still lives on in the name of Cargo.

A new bar in Edinburgh's Fountainbridge, Cargo is run by Festival Inns who are also behind hotspots like the Three Sisters and Beluga in the capital and the Gin House in St Andrews.

Part of a £60n development of the area, Cargo is a contemporary-looking bar that is spread over two floors.

Come the summer, drinkers will be able to sit out on the terrace but for the next few months they will have to content themselves with watching the rain lash against the mammoth plate glass windows. AFTER its refit, the Limehouse in Greenock has resurfaced as the Waterline.

A Belhaven pub, it is aiming for a slightly older crowd than The Yard, its stablemate around the corner.

There is a big emphasis on the food here with a no smoking area separate from the main bar.

Customers can order dishes from the menu like the homemade chicken, leek and ham pie or try the daily chef's special.

Children are welcome until eight in the evening when adults let their hair down and swing from the three big chandeliers in the bar.

OK, I'm joking about the monkey business on the chandeliers.
